Dover town and the seafront (CT16–17)

The core round. Dover's streets behind the seafront and up towards the castle are tight Victorian terraces, slate roofs and bay windows with no easy loft access, cable runs need planning here rather than on a modern estate. Around the Western Docks and Market Square, a good number of premises sit in the conservation area, so external fixings need a lighter touch and sometimes formal consent.

• Dover town centre, Victorian terraces and shopfronts close to the seafront and Market Square.
• Western Heights and Aycliffe, mixed housing on the rise above the port, higher wind exposure on hardware.
• Buckland and Charlton, established residential streets either side of the River Dour.
• River, village on the northern edge of town, mixed older and newer housing.
• Temple Ewell and Kearsney, villages up the Dour valley, larger gardens and more outbuildings.

St Margaret's Bay and the clifftop villages (CT15, CT18)

The White Cliffs coastline east of Dover, sheltered from nothing. Salt air and constant onshore wind shorten the life of budget camera housings fast here, and clifftop gardens often back straight onto the England Coast Path, which matters for doorbell and camera placement as much as for the hardware itself.

• St Margaret's at Cliffe, clifftop village, highest weather exposure on the round, coast-path boundary considerations common.
• Capel-le-Ferne, cliff and downland properties towards Folkestone, similar exposure to St Margaret's.
• Whitfield, larger village and newer estate above the town, more sheltered than the coast.
• Guston, small village near the castle, mixed older and newer housing.
