Buying a solar security camera for a shed or outbuilding: the checklist

Solar cameras are genuinely useful for a shed, stable or boundary fence with no power nearby, but only if the panel, battery and signal all actually suit the spot. Here is what to check before you buy.

Panel orientation and winter sun

A panel that looks fine in July can starve the camera by December. Winter sun sits low over this part of Kent, so a panel needs a clear run of sky through the low-angle months, not just a bright spot in summer. North-facing walls, overhanging trees, and anything shaded by a taller building or fence nearby will all cut into charging, sometimes enough that the battery never fully recovers overnight.

Battery buffering, not just the panel

The panel tops the battery up, it is the battery that actually gets the camera through a run of grey days, which East Kent has plenty of between October and February. Check the manufacturer's stated battery life without any solar input at all, that is the number that matters on a genuinely overcast week, not the marketing figure for full sun.

Wi-Fi range at the actual spot

A shed at the end of a long garden, or a stable block set back from the house, is exactly the kind of place a home router was never designed to reach. Check signal strength at the real mounting point before buying, not from just inside the back door, a camera that drops offline every time the weather turns is not doing its job.

Weatherproofing and housing quality

Look for a genuine outdoor IP rating (IP65 or better is a reasonable minimum for anything not under cover) and check how exposed the mounting spot is to driving rain or salt air if you are near the coast. Cheaper housings degrade faster than the marketing photos suggest, particularly around seals and connectors.
